Permits & Ordinances
Most projects need a permit before work starts. Call the clerk-treasurer if you're not sure whether yours does.
| Permit | When you need it | Where to get it | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Building permit | New homes, additions and garages | Ashby County Inspection, (608) 555-0178 | Based on project size |
| Farm buildings | New barns and machine sheds (often exempt from the building code, but they still need a zoning check) | Ashby County Zoning | Set by the county |
| Driveway or field access | Any new or moved driveway or field entrance onto a town road | Clerk-treasurer; the road foreman checks the site | $35 |
| Burning permit | Burning brush or debris outdoors | Wisconsin DNR, online or by phone | Free |
Roads and snowplowing
Town roads are posted for weight limits during the spring thaw, usually March through April. Farm equipment may use posted roads with care; heavy loads should call the road foreman first. In winter, main routes are plowed first, then gravel roads and lanes.
